Re: Gas Lantern and Stove combo $99 bucks. Good deal?
It looks like a good deal to me. I have two 2 burner propane cookstoves, one 1 burner propane cookstove, a coleman white gas 2 burner cookstove. I prefer the propane cookstoves cuz the propane is easy to start, the gas keeps a nice even flow BUT I also like to have devices that work on a variety of fuels. (I didn't buy all of them, I inherited 2 of them when my in laws died & we cleaned out their house). It's nice to have a coleman stove that operates on white gas cuz white gas is generally so plentiful BUT you have to pump to keep the gas flowing into the burner of the stove and it gets to be a PITA so I would prefer to use propane, it's just easier, especially in difficult circumstances like a power shortage.
I also have a lot of lanterns that use various fuel sources (4 Aladins, 14 cheapo single wick glass oil lamps, 2 coleman dual fuel [regualar gas & white gas] lanterns, 4 propane lanterns, 2 white gas/kerosene lanterns & a few of those railroad lanterns [they are generally good for marking a trail but they don't cast a lot of light] and lots of candles). Again, for ease of lighting and a nice bright light, a propane is good light but most propane lanterns are a little noisy while lit. The bightest light source is an Aladin lamp but their use and maintenance is a little tricky and they are expensive. The white gas or dual fuel lanterns also have to be pumped to maintain the gas flow which is easy to forget if you have a lot going on. I think the set that was in the link is a nice set for a decent price for new items. They will be easy to use for emergency cooking and light at home so I'd get them, especially for a starter set. I don't buy propane items used unless I know the person who Im buying from & that they keep their equipment in good repair cuz I really don't like surprises when it comes to pressurized gas. It's usually ok to get used coleman lanterns cuz its easy to buy and use the repair parts and the fuel isn't pressurized till you pump the lantern. If you can't handle a 20 pound tank when its filled (too heavy for me now), you can buy 5 or 10 pound refillable tanks that are really convienient to get filled and use. I have used those 1 pound cans that are disposible but I really prefer to use my 5 pound "pumpkin" propane can, it's light but you dont' run out of gas as quickly as with those little 1 pound cans. Remember to buy lots of extra wicks / mantles as well as an extra glass globe, that way you are still in business if the lamp falls (and it will, eventually, trust me). You can also buy a "propane tree" which alows you to use the stove and the lamp from one propane can. And now you know all that I know. Good luck with your decision & please let us know how it works out for you. |

My experiences are similar to Clutterbug....started years ago with Coleman white gas stuff, because that was about your only choice. But as the propane stuff came on, my liquid fuel stuff has collected dust, propane is that much better.
While what Roadgold says about gasoline being more available is somewhat true ( would depend on the circumstances ), propane stores FOREVER, whereas liquid fuels are more finicky. Be sure the mantels the lantern uses are common, and be sure you can get an adapter hose for larger bottles.....and price, I don't know if that's a good deal or not over Coleman....but I'd get a propane lantern and campstove of SOME kind either way.....then stick away a few dozen of the 1lb bottles. Bet they would have sold like hotcakes in the DC area this weekend....ahahahahaaa... |

I prefer the propane, no fuel generators, no clogged jets, no pumps to repair, just stock up on lantern mantels, keep all your little bottles and get a refill adapter.

Propane burns MUCH cleaner than any of the alternatives. Oil lamps blacken and stink up the house. White gas stoves will blacken cookware if you don't have it adjusted right.
Downside to propane lanterns is they put out a lot of heat, which can also be an upside. |
